Mr. Irving started his Tang Soo Do career in Massachusetts at the young age of 38 in the summer of 1998 under Master Carl H. MacDermott (5th Dan) and received his 1st degree black belt (Cho Dan) under him in November of 2003. In November of 2005 he received his 2nd Degree Black Belt (E Dan). Beginning in the Summer of 2003, Mr. Irving starting assisting Master Bill Martin (5th Dan) in the operation of the Middleboro, MA Dojang, and in January 2004 after receiving his Cho Dan (1st Degree Black Belt) rank and meeting the requirements for instructor responsibility, was granted the title of Kyo Sah Nim (Instructor of one’s own school) and full responsibility of the Middleboro, Ma Dojang. Job relocation is why Mr. Irving found his way into Apex, NC, in June 2007. Determined to continue training and advancing in rank and knowledge, Mr. Irving returns home once a month to Massachusetts to keep up on his training, and has also been training with other Tang Soo Do practitioners here in the Apex and Fuquay-Varina areas since July 2007. But teaching is and always has been a passion for Mr. Irving, so in January of 2008, Triangle Tang Soo Do Karate Schools, L.L.C. was formed, so that what was given to Mr. Irving through the years by his master instructors and students could continued to be shared with those that desire to learn this great and Classical Martial art. Mr. Irving enjoys teaching adults and children, and is known (back in Massachusetts) for his patience and clever methods of instructing Tang Soo methods and tenants to his students. Whether it be focusing on Tang Soo Do forms (hyungs), one-step sparring (Il Soo Sik Dae Ryun), Sparring (Ja Yu Dae Ryan), self-defense (Ho sun Sol), or fun exercise challenges, Mr. Irving always strives to insure that a good workout from a physically, mental, and spiritual standpoint is obtained each and every class. Mr. Irving strongly believes in adaptive teaching of real-life self-defense techniques from a practical standpoint, taking into account age-appropriateness of the student for the self-defense techniques shown. Both children and adults gain tremendous knowledge in understanding what physical, emotional, and legal challenges one must be concerned with should one need to defend themselves or their loved ones. Mr. Irving firmly believes in the health benefits that a classical martial art like Tang Soo Do provides for the individual, and encourages everyone regardless of age and physical condition to “give it a try”. You will be amazed by what happens.
