Dojang Rules

Before Class

Bow in and out of the Dojang, everytime.

 

Students should arrive 10-15 minutes prior to class to change clothes, stretch out, and mentally prepare for class.

 

All members are expected to bow at least twice when entering the Dojang. Members must bow placing their right arm in a fist over their heart when bowing to the flags first and foremost. Secondly members must bow to the Kyo Sa Nims and Sah Bum Nims present.

 

Lower ranks are responsible for cleaning the training hall, so it is safe and acceptable.

 

Do not enter the training floor if a Kyo Sa Nim or Sah Bah Nim is already present, wait until they motion you in.

 

If you show up late you should wait to be motioned in, stretch out at the back of the class, and stand at attention when ready. Do not join until the Instructor motions you to do so.

 

Always bow and greet Seniors upon first meeting of the day.

 

 

After Class

Lower ranks are responsible for making sure that everything gets put away.

 

Please wait for rides inside the Dojang so Instructors can ensure you get home safely.

 

Please do not play on any of the equipment.

 

No on is allowed to be in the Dojang alone only if you are training with a partner.

 

Beginning/Ending Class

Upon the entrance of a Kyo Sa Nim or Sah Bum Nim the most senior ranking student should call the class to attention and call the commands to bow to the senior ranking member.

 

Students will be asked to line up by the Kyo Sa Nim or Sah Bum Nim. Every student should line up immediately in to one or two lines, according to rank and seniority, highest to your right. The highest ranking students will then call out the commands to begin class.

 

The uniform

Every member must have a uniform with patches and the proper trim. Uniforms are handed out white, pressed, and clean and should remain that way through the duration of your training

If a student forgets any one part of their uniform(Belt, Pants, or Top) they must stand at the end of the line, in the lowest ranking position.

 

Every member should wear their own belt. Belts should not be written on, should not touch the floor and should not be washed at any time. Belts are a representation of one’s knowledge and hard work and should be treated with a great deal of respect.

 

Never touch the belt of a senior student or instructor.

 

No one, except for children being picked up by parents, should be wearing one’s uniform out in public. The only exception is for school sponsored events.

 

After training, members should fold their uniform appropriately and tie one’s belt around it.

 

If your belt comes undone during class you should bow to the front(Instructor and Flags) turn around, fix your belt, and turn back around and bow.

 

Excessive clothing under one’s uniform is not allowed. Everyone is expected to wear t-shirts under one’s top. Any MacDermott’s Tang Soo Do t-shirt is permitted. If you do not have a MTSD t-shirt you must wear a plain white t-shirt or a shirt that is the color of your rank.

 

General

Never leave the class for a break, water, or any early dismissal, except with permission.

 

Never correct those who are senior to you. Rather, if you have a problem or correction ask a Kyo Sa Nim or Sah Bum Nim.

 

It is proper to bow to an Instructor or Senior when, being called upon, addressed, receiving assistance, or receiving correction. It is also proper to stand at attention once you have bowed, the Instructor will dismiss you from attention when you are finished.

 

Pay strict attention to the Instructor, do not interrupt, sit or lie, talk, or lean one walls or windows.

 

Address all Black Belts by Mr/Ms/Mrs or “Sir” or “Ma’am”. Address Certified Black Belts by their proper titles Kyo Sa and Sah Bum or “Sir” or “Ma’am”.

 

Treat all person’s with respect, regardless of rank and age, in and out of the Dojang.

 

Upper belts should set an example and help teach those of lower rank. Do not criticize them, instructing and helping lower belts is part of the training proccess.

 

It is disrespectful to practice techniques or forms that you have no officially learned. Jumping ahead will not aid the learning proccess.

 

Do not lean on walls, sit, or stand idly use your spare time to your advantage.

 

As a sign of respect and responsibility, dues should be paid on time. 

 

Do not demonstrate techniques to those outside the Dojang.

 

When given directions sound off loudly with a “Yes Sir/Ma’am!”

 

Carry out the directives of instructors and senior students promptly. Do not keep the rest of the class waiting for you.

 

Do not yell for Instructors to come to you, but ask or observe a senior student first. Then you may approach an Instructor at the appropriate time.

 

Please turn cell phones off prior to training or keep them outside the Dojang. If you are expecting an emergent call, inform your Instructor beforehand.

 

Free Sparring without the permission of a Kyo Sa Nim or Sah Bum Nim is not allowed.

 

If you are called by an Instructor to perform in front of the class do so with quickly and with honor. If you are demonstrating with the Instructor, do so respectfully and do not flinch or pull away.

 

Food, gum, and beverages are not allowed during training. If necessary, the Instructor will stop for a water break at which point, you may drink water off to the side.

 

Parents and visitors are free to watch the lesson but are requested not to speak to or distract the students during a lesson.

 

Jewelry should not be worn during training. The only exceptions are wedding rings and specific items of religious value. Tape or Band-aids may be placed over earrings that cannot be removed.

 

Never disturb a class in progress, except in the case of an emergency.

 

Fighting outside the Dojang, as well as any behavior that may degrade the Code of Tang Soo Do or the reputation of the School will not be tolerated.

 

Bathroom breaks are not encouraged.

 

There will be in horseplay in the Dojang at any time.

 

Fingernails and toenails should be kept clean and cut short to prevent injuries. Good personal hygiene shows respect for others and is a must.
